Pump School

Introduction to Pumps - one day

Intermediate Pumps - two day

Glenn Reynolds

TWO DAY CENTRIFUGAL PUMP SCHOOL

The Centrifugal Pump is the heart of a water supply system. Knowing how the Centrifugal Pump works is essential to the proper selection and application of these machines.

Anyone who works with centrifugal pumps will benefit. Included will be people who sell and maintain centrifugal pumps, and engineers who design piping systems. The experience level of the students will range from hire-on-yesterday to the 20-year veteran pump man. There will be plenty of new information for pump people, even those who already know everything.  We will be using cut away pumps, operational pumps and pump parts for hands on training.

COURSE CONTENT

Because of the large amount of foundation material required to understand how the pipe system controls the behavior of the pump, the course will be presented over two days. The presentations encourage questions, as this is how we learn about the needs of the students.

The presentations are designed to share experience and knowledge with people who work with centrifugal pumps. Several fundamentals are presented first, to act as a foundation for building the following parts of the school. Each attendee will receive a training manual with all of the supporting text for the subject presentations.

The subjects covered will be:

WATER, How this fluid reacts inside the pump makes all the difference, quick review of its characteristics in the pump.

PRESSURE and Pressure Measurement with basic concepts that we will use. This will include absolute pressure and vapor pressure.

HEAD, which is so basic to the definition of a pump. This is much more than just terminology, but basic physics.

The CENTRIFUGAL PUMP – HOW IT WORKS, using the building blocks that we have established in the previous three presentations.

PUMP PERFORMANCE CURVES and their special interpretation, You’ll learn why it is so important that you see the manufacturer’s graphs, and know what they mean.

PIPE SYSTEMS and PIPE FRICTION to learn how the pump is applied, Learn to avoid one of the most common mistakes in pump installation!

SYSTEM HEAD DEMAND (SHD) procedure for selecting a pump, Many pumps can move water, you need to learn what is the BEST pump for the application including how the actual point of operation of the pump in a piping system is determined by the equilibrium between the head demanded by the system and the head produced by the pump.

CAVITATION, what it is and what causes it and how to eliminate it. We use hands on, cavitation damaged components, to learn to recognize the appearance of cavitation damage. We will use a vacuum pump to demonstrate how water changes from liquid form to vapor form when the absolute pressure becomes equal to or less than the vapor pressure for the water.

Net Positive Suction Head (NPSH). We will learn how to predict NPSH Available at the job site, and how to predict the Suction Gauge reading for the site conditions. We will learn how to use an observed Suction Gauge reading at the installation to determine if the system is working properly.

Schools should start as close to 0800 hours as possible, and will run to 1600 hours with two breaks and provided lunch

Students will receive Contining Education Credits toward the renewal of State License requirements for Continuing education.
