Surface and Well Water Treatment, Filtration and Disinfection Projects

Surface Water Collection, Storage and Distribution

Ranch Water Project

A large Northern California ranch required water infrastructure for domestic consumption, fire suppression, landscape irrigation and a pond. The property posed unique challenges due to its insufficient ground water supply, remote location, and extreme elevation changes. Water sources were assessed, prioritized by cost and quality. Stream intakes were designed to be self cleaning and allow for winter storm flow. Sediment is removed with settling tanks and pathogen reduction is accomplished with ultraviolet disinfection. Storage was designed to indicate system status by dropping pressure as storage levels fell, thus reducing consumption automatically. Water Solutions supervised the repair of 70,000 gallons of redwood tankage. Wireless controls automatically refill the tanks from a pump-up source in the event of a drought.

Ground Water Project

Turf Irrigation Site

This Northern California cemetery desired reduction of municipal water supply dependence. Water Solution Inc. evaluated and repaired the client’s ground water source. We determined that no new wells were required, only the rehabilitation of the existing well.  Water Solutions Inc. recommended installing a new well screen and gravel pack, resulting in well production increasing from 15gpm to 110 gpm (a 633% increase). Water Solutions also installed a wireless tank level controller. Since the tank and water sources are co-located two miles from the client’s point of use, this controller allows remote water control including tank level control and pump operation. We also performed cleaning and re-roofing and repair of two 40,000-gallon redwood tanks. Water Solutions installed two fire-suppression 15,000-gallon, fiberglass storage tanks at the client’s youth retreat center. The municipal water connection is now automatically controlled to provide low pressure in the event the on-site supply is exhausted.

Spring Water Collection, Slow Sand Filtration, Disinfection and Storage

Belvoir Springs Guest House

The Belvoir Springs Guest House is a small public water system that uses spring water. Water Solutions Inc. designed and installed a new spring water collection and storage system, a slow sand filtration system, and chlorine injection. The system includes Internet monitoring and monthly report generation. At a cost of $30,000 dollars, the Guest House has a safe, low cost water system at less than ½ the cost of connecting to the neighboring public utility. The slow sand filter requires only an annual cleaning. This system has been running since 1998 with no additional expenses other than chlorine and lab testing. The system ran with no electrical power for the first four years. Electricity was installed for instrument monitoring purposes. www.belvoirsprings.com

Pekin Duck Farm

Disinfection, Filtration, Disinfection, Taste and Odor

Woodland Farms needed quality water to feed Pekin ducklings. Water Solutions Inc. designed a cost effective water treatment system which was installed by the on-site staff. Woodland Farms purchases low quality irrigation water, which limited duck growth and health. The water treatment process includes chlorine, filtration and ozone. Booster pumps are protected from power issues and low water with motor protectors. The new water system quality is very good and the cost was 1/3 that of a package plant. http://www.mapleleaffarms.com/

Surface Water Treatment Compliance

Elementary School

A one hundred twenty-five person school using surface water was experiencing positive coliform tests and turbidity in excess of 4 NTU at the tap. Water Solutions Inc. performed a Water Shed Sanitary Survey and guided the school through the installation of pre-filtration, diatomaceous earth filtration, ultraviolet disinfection, and ozone treatment. As part of the project, the school implemented Water Solutions' recommendations, resulting in water use reduction of 70%.  These changes reduced the treatment equipment and electrical costs and extended the septic system life expectancy. The school is now in full compliance with State regulations and is used as a training site for State Regulators. Pope Valley School

Rainwater Catchment Drinking Water System

Farallon Island Wildlife Refuge

How do you collect rainwater from an island with 300,000 birds? Very carefully! Water Solutions Inc. developed a combination of procedures and equipment to make the water safe to drink on this “off the grid” research center. Coliform, nitrate and turbidity were the principal contaminants. Zero waste discharge, minimal electrical power, and total dependence of seasonal rainwater source were the challenges. Using a multi-barrier approach of filtration, ozonation, ultraviolet disinfection and ion exchange, the water is safe with very low power consumption. U.S. Fish & Wildlife

Surface Water Treatment Plant for a small community

Capell Valley Mobile Home Estates is located in Napa County, California and uses surface water for the community drinking water source.  The existing water treatment plant was forty years old and falling to pieces.  We designed a renovation to reuse any equipment which was salvageable, provide redundancy (multiple pathogen reduction systems) and simple to operate.  We ended up with a pressure switch control system (the ultimate in simplicity and reliability), only one set of pumps and a theoretical six log (99.9999%) reduction of pathogens. This system utilizes the Mission SCADA system to allow remote monitoring and compliance reporting to be generated automatically for less than $30 per month.

Water Shed Sanitary Survey

Water Solutions Inc has been performing some of the west coasts best water shed sanitary surveys for more than ten years.  We use our Cessna 182 airplane fitted with a slow speed modification (STOHL kit) and high performance engine (TS-520) to visually survey the watershed and identify any issues for further study.  While we fly these missions with two investigators for safety, both are drinking water experts with specific experience and training in water shed sanitary surveys.  This means the water system gets a vastly better evaluation than can be obtained with satellite, high altitude photos or ground level only review.  We follow up the air work with 4-wheel drive, quad-runner or foot reconnaissance where needed.  Our knowledge of drinking water regulation (We publish the state rules) allows us to prepare a factual survey.   Our reports have been credited with saving water utilities ten of thousands of dollars in compliance and testing issues.
